SCARP grads take victory lap before their next adventure begins

SCARP grads holding diplomas

On Thursday, May 30, sunshine defeated rain as a SCARP cohort of extraordinary change-makers celebrated their graduation with loved ones, mentors, and peers. It's been our privilege to give them some of the tools and lenses that will help them undertake their extraordinary work, and now we celebrate their transformation into alumni and partners of SCARP.

These graduating students have been a tremendous force in the SCARP community, renewing a sense of camaraderie and possibility, growing an entire infrastructure of planning networks, and serving communities across BC with their insights and work.

With herculean challenges to tackle as card-carrying planners and with summer around the corner, there are any number of perfect answers to the question "What next?", from networking in the Planning Institute of BC, to exciting new jobs in the field, to sweet-nothing, to bold research ventures, to weddings.

In the years to come, many of them will return to SCARP to mentor new students and share with them opportunities to join their organisations as interns and project partners.

In the meantime, though, with no further ado...

Congrats to these amazing grads!

Don’t give up and keep going! Community is at the center of all things – determining goals, directing action, finding support, and celebrating achievements. Momentum and success are fostered by a dedicated, kind, and empathetic team environment that welcomes and invites people to work together. Don’t be afraid to lean on your community for support whenever you may find you need it!

"My time at SCARP has inspired in me, for the first time, a true sense of belonging in a community, it has helped me discover my ambitions, and has assured me that our chosen careers in planning tap into my core values of curiosity, empathy, and collaboration. I am very grateful to have learned alongside and from my peers, whom I admire greatly. I'm certain we will succeed in cultivating joy and justice in our communities wherever we can apply ourselves."

"Bus Priority in Motion: An Implementation Toolkit for Metro Vancouver"

"My time at SCARP has been amazing not only for learning about planning in Vancouver and around the world, but also for the connections and knowledge I have gained from my fellow classmates and professors, who brought diverse knowledge and experience to the classroom and enabled me to make lifelong connections."

Studio project:
“Granville Island: Enhancing a Public Market Experience”

"The community of planners, students, and professors at SCARP brings a range of perspectives and knowledge systems to the program. This, along with the structure of the program, has truly helped me understand how planners work in real life. SCARP has helped me to broaden my outlook and prepare me for future challenges. Its focus on intersectionality and sensitivity to issues like decolonization has enhanced my perspective on planning as a practice."
