About this award

The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council's Canada Graduate Scholarships—Master’s program supports high-calibre scholars who are engaged in an eligible master’s or, in some cases, doctoral program in Canada. This support allows these scholars to concentrate more fully on their studies in their chosen fields.

The research that won Alea this scholarship

"Municipal Climate Change Policy Mapped to Visions of A Post-Growth World"

This project is seeking to evaluate whether municipal climate plans, specifically Vancouver’s Climate Emergency Action Plan, can align with principles of post-growth in order to support a fundamental shift from growth-based principles of current climate policies that are focused heavily on justifications that prioritize economic growth and output while simultaneously attempting to reduce greenhouse gas emissions that come from this economic activity.

This research will identify opportunities for municipalities to move away from growth-centric principles based in economic growth and greenhouse gas reductions, without considering the concerns of communities. The concept of post-growth will support the conceptualization of the word in a new way, where everyone has access to the resources that they need in sufficient quantities. To achieve the systemic change required to limit the current rise in global average temperatures, there is an opportunity for intervention – and the implementation of policies that align with the idea of a post-growth world.

I applied for this award based on a research interest that started at the very end of my undergraduate degree, inspired by one of my professors who introduced me to ideas of growth, post-growth, degrowth, etc.

I have dedicated my academic and professional experience to the field of climate change and I wanted to use this award to look into the intersections of these two interests.

I am incredibly honoured to have been selected for a SSHRC CGS-M Scholarship and to have had the importance of this research identified - and I am thrilled to embark on this journey!

Congrats Alea! We can't wait to see where your insights take you.
