Part of Dr. Harten's larger research into housing

April 2023Harten presents her work so far showing stunning phenomena with housing strategies among marginalised peoples. She envisions large language models as a way to unravel the process to benefit all.
June 2024Harten is awarded the New Frontiers in Research Fund for her research into meaningful change in the housing crisis and to "democratise housing development, revolutionise housing supply, and unlock a new path for social science research leveraging ethical AI".
January 2025Harten joins the Bridging Divides Research Program (which is committed to advancing knowledge about the challenges and opportunities that migrant integration poses in Canada and beyond) for her work.
May 2025Harten publishes the findings we're discussing today

"With the stakes so high, it is not surprising then that debates on the root causes of this crisis and the appropriate measures to counter it are fierce. Housing policy has been on the ballot in every major election since 2015; the issue of supply—how much and what kind is needed—has become particularly polarizing."

"When defining housing need, it matters whether housing is viewed primarily as a private investment, a (public) consumption good, or a human right."
