The Land Use Solutions Analyst supports delivery of Smart Growth, Smart City, a program to advance sustainable land use as a cornerstone to renewable, resilient and restorative cities. The Land Use Solutions Analyst will be part of an interdisciplinary team, supporting analysis, engagement, knowledge mobilization and policy innovation for integrating urban land use into climate change mitigation across transportation, buildings and natural systems.
The successful candidate will be a graduate of an engineering, technology, environmental sciences, urban studies or equivalent post-secondary program. The candidate will have skills and abilities necessary to sufficiently perform duties requiring quantitative analytical skills and technical knowledge. We are particularly interested in candidates that have knowledge of and experience in conducting greenhouse gas inventories, as well as an understanding of urban land use, transportation, environmental and social issues.
The successful candidate will be passionate about advancing climate action in urban regions of all sizes and finding systemic solutions to complex challenges of housing and transportation affordability, civic infrastructure deficits, farmland protection and ecological integrity. While the position will apply lessons from global precedents, the primary geography of interest is urban British Columbia, followed by urban Canada.
- Support development and delivery of quantitative and qualitative analytical activities for Renewable Cities’ Smart Growth, Smart City program to advance discourse, policy and practice on urban land use, carbon management, affordability and sustainability. Support data collection and analysis of feasibility, cost/benefits, and other related topics on land use emissions to produce a range of interventions and scenarios in integrated urban systems, and to formulate recommendations and communicate results with a range of audiences
- Support the delivery of analysis and report writing such as white papers, guidebooks and communication material for external stakeholders and audiences.
- Support development and maintenance of a network of contacts (including policymakers and government officials).
- Collaborate, support and participate in planning, design, and implementation of formal and informal engagement activities with diverse constituencies. This may include providing logistical and planning support for meetings and workshops.
Education & Experience
- Post-secondary graduate of Engineering, Technology, Urban Design, Urban Planning or Engineering program, or an equivalent program, such as natural, physical or social sciences.
- Interest and experience in interdisciplinary and collaborative approaches to transforming discourse and policy.
- Experience with interdisciplinary land use-related projects is an asset.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Strong quantitative and qualitative research and analysis skills, including multi-criteria analysis, integration of diverse data sets, and potentially spatial analytical abilities such as ArcGIS.
- An interest in energy and emission quantification methodologies across transportation, buildings and associated land-use.
- Creating, maintaining and managing systems to collect, organize, manage, analyze and summarize large volumes of data.
- Ability to research and analyze the environmental, social, and economic impact of sustainability strategies.
- Knowledge about urban land use policy, planning and implementation, including transportation infrastructure, housing, natural and managed environments, GHGs, and other local, provincial and national priorities would be an asset.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and time management skills.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Strong verbal and excellent written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and with a team. Ability to take ownership of tasks and seek input when needed.
- Deep knowledge of MS Excel. Proficient in the in the use of design, word processing and database software applications, including Adobe Creative Suite and MS Office.
- Passion for urban climate action in big and small cities and a keen interest in advancing affordability, equity, and ecosystem and farmland protection and restoration.
- Keen interest in advancing policy innovation (local, provincial and/or national) to support cities’ deep 2030 GHG reduction and zero emissions 2050 targets.
- Deep curiosity in understanding complexity, an innovative and imaginative outlook, and a desire for elegant, systemic solutions.
- An interest in creatively advancing synergies between Indigenous priorities and urban climate action.
