I wanted to let you know that we have a SCARP connection with the World’s Challenge Challenge finals taking place on Thursday, February 7th from 5 to 8pm at the CK Choi Building. The competition and the student team was just featured on the UBC website: https://news.ubc.ca/2019/02/05/ubc-students-tackle-global-issues-in-worlds-challenge-challenge/ .
The student team featured in the article includes: Jordan Konyk, a Master’s student in the School of Community and Regional Planning, Narayan Gopinathan, a Master’s student at the Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability, and Denby McDonnell, a Master’s student in the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs.
The World’s Challenge Challenge is just one of the many events taking place during the Global Lounge’s International Development Week programming. Please feel free to share this event, along with our other events next week, to any other interested colleagues and students.
I’m pleased to let you know that UBC is one of eighteen participating universities in The World’s Challenge Challenge. Student teams will compete by presenting to a panel of academic and community leaders on a global challenge and how they plan to solve it. The winning team members each receive a cash prize of $2000 and a chance to compete in the international competition at Western University in London, Ontario in June 2019. The first prize winners get a total of $30 000 and the second prize group will receive $15 000. The intention for the prize money is to help further develop and implement the proposed solution.
Further information and eligibility is available on the Global Lounge website: The World’s Challenge Challenge
Applications from student teams will be accepted until 11:59pm, December 16, 2018. The top ten student teams will have two weeks to prepare their presentations, which will take place on February 7, 2019.
We have already been in touch with many faculty communications teams earlier this month, but wanted to send this out so faculty and staff in SCARP could help promote the contest to their students in the last week of classes through any student listservs, social media or newsletters. We also have a social media toolkit.
If you have any questions or need further information, please don’t hesitate to contact me directly.
