SCARP Assistant Professor Holly Caggiano published a new paper with co-authors, all about teaching environmental and climate justice. With the urgency of the topic and the challenges of translating the field into the classroom and beyond, this work offers a new adaptable framework:

"Using sense of place to communicate actionable environmental and climate justice in interdisciplinary classrooms"

In 2024, Holly Caggiano alongside colleagues Alana Rader and An-Min Wu organised a series of workshops through the American Association of Geographers' Human Dimensions of Global Change specialty group. This group brought together educators across disciplines to talk about how we teach on these nuanced, and often fraught, issues.

Caggiano reflects:

"We were motivated by our own struggles as ECRs: lack of formal pedagogy training, difficulty finding innovative ways to ground EJ/CJ issues for students, never ending class prep.

Three excellent educators (Dr. Jim Proctor, Prof. La'Meshia Whittington, and Dr. Jeremy Mennis) shared some great tools they use in the classroom, each grounded in different methods and disciplinary traditions. We wrote this paper reflecting on how these tools might change our own practice."

We hope this adds to the growing body of work that identifies effective pedagogical tools and makes them accessible to educators & students (and maybe even helps out some frazzled ECRs knee deep in course prep).
