Penny Gurstein awarded Dean's Medal of Distinction

SCARP Director Penny Gurstein has been awarded the Faculty of Applied Science Dean's Medal of Distinction. "The medal serves to recognize individuals who have brought high honour to the Faculty and/or who have made long standing/significant contributions to advance its vision, mission and mandate."

Dr. Gurstein has been SCARP Director since 2008. She has guided the School through two accreditations, the development of the Master of Community and Regional Planning (MCRP) Professional Program and a revamped Research Masters degrees (MAP/MScP) as well as the recent development of five new undergraduate service courses. Penny spearheaded SCARP's participation in the Vancouver Summer Program, which brings young international students to UBC to take specialized planning courses in June and July and she has been a tireless advocate for a single building location for SCARP students, faculty and staff.

While serving as Director Penny has taught planning courses and been active in her research area of affordable housing. She is a founding member of the Housing Research Collaborative where she will continue her research after she leaves the directorship at the end of August 2018.
