##### I'm considering mentoring an MCRP student

## Make an impact by sharing your insight with students.

Expand your professional network and enrich the planning community by inspiring the next generation of planners.

Share your knowledge and experience with students who are defining their career path, expanding their professional network, and developing professional skills.

As a mentor you will:

- Be matched with one or two first-year Master of Community and Regional Planning (MCRP) students in a discipline or interest similar to your own
- Attend networking events where you will have the opportunity to connect with students and industry professionals
- Meet with your students several times over the course of the academic year.

## Why Become a Mentor?

Many of our mentors tell us that they get as much out of the mentoring program as their protégés!

As a mentor, you will:

- Grow your professional network with tomorrow’s upcoming professionals and peers
- Hone your communication skills and leadership skills
- Learn from new experiences and perspectives
- Reignite your connection with SCARP and all the networking and professional opportunities that may bring
- (If you’re a candidate member of PIBC) earn Continuous Professional Learning points towards PIBC planning certification
- Give someone a solid foundation in your field and watch their unique insights and contributions take shape!

Mentoring is encouraged and recognized by the Planning Institute of British Columbia.

## What is expected of you as a Mentor?

Your involvement will span from November to April, with a time commitment of approximately 20 hours (or more if you'd like!)

##### I'm an MCRP student who needs a mentor

SCARP's Mentoring Program offers our [Masters of Community and Regional Planning](https://scarp.ubc.ca/mcrp) students an excellent opportunity for students to gain valuable insights into the planning profession and to connect with industry professionals.

## A Program for first-year Master's students

Participate in the UBC School of Community and Regional Planning (SCARP) Mentoring Program and explore the unique opportunity to network with industry professionals and gain valuable skills - such as interviewing and professional communication skills - while expanding your knowledge about planning professions.

The program focuses on the unique needs of the planning student population, matching you with a planning professional with a similar discipline or interests.

## Why Participate?

- Start to build a professional network with industry professionals and student peers
- Expand your knowledge about planning professions
- Learn from established planners and gain exposure to new ideas and opportunities
- Get involved (or more deeply involved) with SCARP and professional societies such as the Planning Institute of BC, and earn points towards professional planner certification

## What’s expected of you?

Your involvement will span the length of the academic year, from September through to the end of April, with a total time commitment of approximately 20 hours.

Welcome prospective protégés! To ensure a suitable match between you and your mentor, please complete these questions. When answering, keep in mind this questionnaire is designed to populate your answers into a bio, which will be shared with prospective mentors for consideration.

Some fields have character limits. If there's not enough room for your answer, think about how you can say it more briefly.

The difference between this bio and a resume, though, is that you don't need to be shy about your shortcomings or room for growth. That's what this program is for! Your mentor's task, which they're happy to undertake, is to guide you through that growth.
