SCARP's PhD students run a research forum where our PhD students share and invite questions about their emerging research findings. Some of these students welcome attendees from beyond SCARP.

Feel free to join us for the next PhD Forum at SCARP:

Ana Polgár presents:

Addressing Data Scarcity and Scales to Contextualise Risks and Nature in the City

In this presentation, Ana will discuss the findings of her comprehensive exams (which we're delighted to report she just passed!) The first exam paper called "Seeing through satellites, streets and stories" dives into the practical and ethical challenges we encounter in the spatial knowledge production for (ecosystem-based) climate change adaptation in data scarce environments, such as rapidly growing cities in the Global South, and proposes a set of principles and mixed methods approaches to address these challenges. The second exam paper is called "Finding the scalar fit for urban nature-based solutions" where Ana discusses the spatial, temporal, and functional scales of urban nature-based solutions (NBS) and how they align with the scales of urban environmental riskscapes. Ana will give a brief overview of the findings of these exams and then have a look forward into how she will use these conceptual and methodological frames in her dissertation research.

Light snacks and coffee will be provided, but feel free to bring your lunch!

More about Ana Polgár

Ana Polgár researches how nature-based solutions for climate-change adaptation affect, reinforce or respond to socio-spatial inequalities in cities in the Global South. This research project will develop a mixed method approach combining qualitative and quantitative modes of data collection and analysis to conduct remote as well as participatory field research on the distribution of interventions and to assess local vulnerabilities. Through a number of case studies in the Global South, Ana aims to recognize and address the realities of urban socio-spatial inequalities. This approach aims to support the localized management of resilience needs, and will help cities to more appropriately respond to the specific vulnerabilities of local communities with NBS.
