Community Engaged Housing Research Network

The Community Engaged Housing Research Network was inspired by the Symposium on Challenges to Affordable and Sustainable Housing held on October 16, 2009. The Symposium addressed some of the challenging questions facing the provision of affordable and sustainable housing in BC

  • Why does affordable housing remain such a significant challenge for our society, both in urban and rural areas?
  • Which groups in our society face the biggest affordable housing challenges?
  • What are the best practices in creating affordable housing?
  • How can the provision of affordable housing be addressed within a framework and standards of sustainable development?
  • How can market housing address climate change imperatives?
  • What are the emerging housing needs and new challenges?
  • What are the challenges and opportunities for social and public housing projects that have been built?
  • What should be the respective roles of local, provincial and federal governments in the provision of affordable and sustainable housing?

UBC School of Community and Regional Planning invited graduate students, scholars and housing policy practitioners to submit their papers for panel presentations and for roundtable discussions. The proceedings of the Symposium are available on this site, as well as current housing research links, future research topics and events related to housing, and a forum to discuss the issues.
