Doctoral Student Annual Tuition Fees (2009-2010)
Full-time Studies (Schedule A)
- Canadian and Canadian Permanent Resident: $4,098.30
- International: $7,200 (partial international tuition scholarship is available)
In addition, there are student-levied fees of approximately $620. Fees are due in three equal installments (September, January, May). The university reserves the right to change fees without notice. Please check the UBC Calendar for up-to date fee information.
Student Funding
School of Community & Regional Planning Scholarships
Four scholarships totaling $1,000 each are awarded to students entering the second year of their Master’s degree at SCARP and are awarded for academic excellence. The Scholarships were established in 1990 from interest received on major grants the School received in the 1960’s from the Richard King Mellon Charitable Trust Grant and the Donor Canadian Foundation Grant.

Graduate Entrance Scholarships
Graduate entrance scholarships are available each year. Awards are based on academic excellence. A separate application does not have to be completed for this scholarship. Award amounts vary based on university funding. Awardees will be notified once School funding has been established for the academic year.
Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC)
The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) provides research funding for Canadian graduate students in the social sciences and humanities.
Applicants to SCARP Doctoral Program
Applicants to SCARP please submit a SSHRC application through your current university or directly to SSHRC before you are admitted to SCARP. The SSHRC website will explain the application process and deadlines. Do not apply directly to SCARP.
Current SCARP Doctoral Students
If you are a citizen or permanent resident of Canada and have a minimum first class standing [80% or higher at UBC] in each of the last two years of full-time study you may be eligible for a CGS Doctoral Scholarship worth $35,000 per annum for 3 years or a SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship worth $20,000 per annum for up to four years.
Applications should be submitted directly to the School of Community & Regional Planning. Our application & supporting document deadline is Friday, September 21st, 2007 at 4:00pm for awards to be allocated in September 2008.
Faculty of Graduate Studies Affiliated Fellowships
The Faculty of Graduate Studies offers approximately 220 Affiliated Fellowships each year to meritorious students for full-time study and/or research leading to a graduate degree. Awards are made on the basis of academic excellence, and are open to currently registered, full-time UBC graduate students regardless of citizenship or visa status. Fellowship values range from $300 to $27,500, but most are in the range of $16,000-$17,000.

Bursaries
Bursaries are non-repayable awards that are allocated primarily on the basis of financial need. Generally, first consideration is given to those applicants who are also in receipt of government student financial assistance (student loans and grants). Bursary recipient information is confidential and not made available to departments. 7840 Cromie-Dix Memorial Bursary - This fund was established as a memorial by the friends of Samual Patrick Cromie and William Derke Dix, who lost their lives in a tragic accident on February 16, 1957. Samual Cromie, born in Vancouver in 1918 was, at the time of his death, Vice President and Assistant Publisher of the Vancouver Sun, and William Dix, born in London England in 1918 was Vice-President of Sales for Canada of Neon Products of Canada limited. Both served in the Second World War and contributed generously of their time and talents to the welfare of their fellow citizens, especially through their work with the Community Chest. In keeping with the tenor of their public service this fund provides bursaries totaling $4,400 to student in the fields of Education, Social Work, Business Administration or Community & Regional Planning and related areas of study.
8057 Rose Richmond Bursary – A bursary of $300 has been provided by her family in honour of Rose Richmond in recognition of her respect and support for education. The bursary is given to a student entering the second year of a Master’s program in Community & Regional Planning.
8228 University Women’s Club of Vancouver Mary Kelly Memorial Bursary – Bursaries totaling $1,250 have been endowed in honour of Mary Kelly by the University Women’s Club of Vancouver Trust Fund for Education for fourth year students in Anthropology, Sociology, or Political Science, or graduate students in the School of Community & Regional Planning.
8410 Ira M. Robinson Bursary in Community and Regional Planning - Bursaries totalling $1,000 every year have been endowed by Dr. Ira M. Robinson for students in the School of Community and Regional Planning. Dr. Robinson was a Professor in Community and Regional Planning at UBC from 1952 to 1961 and is currently Emeritus Professor of Urban Planning at the University of Calgary.
Work Study Program
Work-Study Program UBC Work Study is an employment program that provides domestic students with the opportunity to work on campus in a variety of jobs and earn additional income to help finance their education. Students can work a maximum of 10 hours/week and earn up to $3,000 for the Winter Session (September - April). Please read the eligibility information carefully and apply early! Program changes for 2007/08 No application form or student loan is necessary to be eligible for the program. Work Study is now open to all academic programs for domestic undergraduate students who are enrolled in at least 9 credits per term or domestic graduate students paying full-time tuition.
